Common questions about our gas, heating and plumbing services

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What areas do you cover?

We are based in Burnt Oak and cover North and West London, including Barnet, Brent, Harrow, Camden, Islington, Enfield, Ealing, Hillingdon, Hampstead, Highgate, Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. If you are not sure whether we reach you, give us a call and we will confirm.

How long have you been in the trade?

Gas Direct Service is led by Bashir, who has more than 10 years of hands-on experience in gas, heating and plumbing work. You deal with the same engineer from the first visit to the finished job, not a rotating team of subcontractors.

Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. All of our gas work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we carry a Gas Safe ID card you are welcome to ask to see. Gas work must legally be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we keep our registration current.

What are your hours?

We are available seven days a week, from 08:00 to 20:00, Monday to Sunday. For non-urgent work we will book a time that suits you; if you have an urgent heating or gas problem, call us and we will do our best to help quickly.

Do you give free quotes?

Yes. We provide free, no-obligation quotes for installations and larger jobs. Call or message us, or use the enquiry form on this site, and we will come back to you with a clear price and no hidden extras.

How do I get a quote or book you in?

The quickest way is to call or WhatsApp us on 07983 683930. You can also fill in the enquiry form on this site with a few details and some photos of the job, and we will get back to you.

How much does a new boiler cost?

A new boiler installation typically runs from around £1,500 to £4,000 supplied and fitted, depending on the boiler you choose, the size of your system, and any extra work needed. We give you a clear fixed price after surveying your home.

Do you install all types of boilers?

Yes. We fit and install any type or brand of boiler, including combi, system and regular boilers from all the major manufacturers. We will recommend the right option for your property, hot water demand and budget.

Do you repair all types of boilers?

Yes. We service and repair all types and brands of boiler. We carry common spares in the van, so many faults are fixed on the first visit, and we always give honest advice on whether a repair or replacement makes more sense.

How often should I service my boiler?

Once a year. An annual service keeps the boiler running safely and efficiently, catches small problems early, and keeps most manufacturer warranties valid. Autumn is a popular time to book, ready for winter.

Do you remove the old boiler?

Yes. Removing and safely disposing of your old boiler is included as part of an installation. We handle the disconnection, removal and disposal so you do not have to arrange anything separately.

Can you fix cold spots on my radiators?

Yes. Cold spots are usually caused by air or by sludge building up in the system. We will find the cause and put it right, whether that means bleeding and balancing the radiators or carrying out a power flush.

What is a power flush and do I need one?

A power flush clears sludge and rust out of your central heating so radiators heat evenly and the boiler runs more efficiently. It is often the right answer to cold radiators and slow warm-up, and we will tell you honestly when it is worth doing.

Can you install a smart thermostat?

Yes. We install and set up smart thermostats such as Nest and Honeywell, so you can control your heating to a schedule or from your phone and only heat your home when you need to.

Do you install and repair underfloor heating?

Yes. We install new wet underfloor heating and service and repair existing systems, including setting up and balancing the manifold and tracking down cold zones or loops that have stopped heating.

Can you install or replace radiators?

Yes. We fit new radiators, replace old ones, and can help you rebalance the system so every room heats as it should.

Do you install hot water cylinders?

Yes. We install unvented (mains-pressure) hot water cylinders, sized to your home, so you get strong hot water at every tap and shower without a loft tank.

Are you qualified to work on unvented cylinders?

Yes. Our engineers are G3 certified, which is the qualification legally required to install, commission, service and maintain unvented hot water storage systems under Building Regulations Approved Document G3.

Can you service or repair my existing cylinder?

Yes. We service unvented cylinders, check the safety controls and expansion vessels, and carry out repairs. A yearly check keeps the system safe and protects its performance.

How much does a cylinder installation cost?

An unvented hot water cylinder is typically from around £1,000 to £3,000 supplied and fitted, depending on the size of cylinder and the work involved. We give you a fixed price after looking at the job.

What does a gas cooker or hob installation involve?

We connect the appliance, check the fitting and isolation valve, and finish with a tightness test and a safety check. Gas appliance work should only ever be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, which is exactly what we are.

Do you service gas fireplaces?

Yes. We service and maintain gas fireplaces, including cleaning and a spillage test to make sure combustion products are cleared safely rather than spilling back into the room. Booking a service before winter is a good idea.

Do you provide landlord gas safety certificates?

Yes. We carry out landlord gas safety checks and issue the certificate you need to meet your legal obligations for a tenanted property, usually on the same visit.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Do not turn any switches on or off, put out naked flames, open doors and windows, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 straight away. Once you are safe, we can help with any repairs needed.

Do you handle general plumbing jobs?

Yes. We cover everyday plumbing across North and West London, from leaks and dripping taps to new taps, sinks, valves and waste pipework. If you have a list of small jobs, we are happy to work through them in one visit.

Can you fix a leak?

Yes. We track down the source of a leak and fix it at the cause rather than papering over it, and we will check the surrounding pipework while we are there to make sure nothing else is at risk.

Do you fit taps, showers and sinks?

Yes. We fit and repair taps, mixer showers and sinks, all fitted cleanly, sealed properly, and tested before we leave.
